2023 PSWA Scholarship Recipients
The Philadelphia Sports Writers Association, in conjunction with its PSWA Foundation, proudly awarded three students from Philadelphia area colleges and universities with $1,000 awards which they were able to use during the 2023-24 academic year.
The winners were (pictured L-R above): Colin Beazley and Patrick Scanlon of Villanova University, and Aidan Tyksinski from LaSalle University. The three recipients were all recognized at the 119th PSWA Banquet on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2024, at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Cherry Hill, NJ.
The 2024 winners, who will be announced soon here on our website and social media platforms, will be recognized at the 120th PSWA Banquet on Thursday, Jan 16, 2025, with tickets now available. Interested college students can learn more about our scholarship opportunities here.
Beazley, who is a resident of Calabasas, CA, was given the Jack Scheuer Scholarship, named in honor of the late long-time Philadelphia sports reporter who served as a mentor to so many in the business. Scheuer, who passed away at the age of 88 in Oct. 2020, spent 46 years as a freelance sports reporter for the Associated Press.

Beazley, who, at the time of applying for the award was preparing to enter his senior year with a 3.48 GPA, and had bylines in the Philadelphia Inquirer reporting on Villanova athletics. Beazley, who graduated in the spring of 2024, also had written for the Villanova campus newspaper, The Villanovan. He has since landed a job covering local sports for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Scanlon, who was a rising senior at Villanova with a 3.71 GPA at the time he submitted his scholarship application in 2023, is from Coral Springs, FL. Scanlon, who graduated in May 2024, was a football and basketball broadcaster for the Villanova student radio station, WXVU, 89.1-FM. Since his graduation, he moved on to grad school at Syracuse University, studying Broadcast and Digital Journalism and is working as an intern for CBBReview.com. He will graduate in July 2025 and can be found on X/Twitter at @PatScan52.

Tyksinski is a resident of Doylestown, PA. As a student at LaSalle, he owned a 3.92 GPA at the time of his application submission in 2023. He has been a co-producer and host of Sports Talk Philadelphia for the on-campus television station at LaSalle while also writing for the university’s newspaper, the Collegian. He has also covered multiple tournaments for National Collegiate Rugby and was a video intern for the Philadelphia Eagles from May 2023-Jan. 2024. In 2024, after graduating, Tyksinski has been doing freelance writing for Philadelphia Sports Digest and the Bucks County Beacon. He can be found on X/Twitter at @AJTyksinski.
