The highlight of every Philadelphia Sports Writers Dinner is the announcement of our Most Courageous Sportsperson of the Year. In 2024, we will recognize basketball coaching lifer Joe Mihalich on his will to press on despite suffering what could have been a fatal stroke back in 2020. The owner of more than 400 career wins as a Division I head coach, he has returned to the sidelines as a special assistant to head coach Fran Dunphy at his alma mater, LaSalle University. Living Legend-Team: 1973-74 Philadelphia Flyers Stanley Cup Champions (50th Anniversary, players scheduled to appear include Bernie Parent, Dave Schultz, Bob Kelly, Orest Kindrachuk, Don Saleski, Joe and Jim Watson, and team PR rep Joe Kadlec). Here’s a second story in which Bob Clarke looks back on the historic Cup win.

Governor of the Flyers and CEO and Chairman of Comcast Spectator Dan Hilferty will appear. Hilferty also led Philadelphia’s successful bid to be a host city for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ and continues to serve as Chair of the Board of Directors of Philadelphia Soccer 2026.

2023 PSWA Pro Athlete of the Year: Jaron Ennis (IBF Welterweight Champion).

Humanitarian of the Year, Aaron Nola (Philadelphia Phillies pitcher) will be recognized for his many charitable endeavors both in Philadelphia and his home state of Louisiana.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson will address the crowd and discuss the team’s expectations for 2024 just as he did a year ago in a moment that went viral.

Former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Sr., will accept the Amateur Athlete of the Year on behalf of his son, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Clemson football multi-time All-American linebacker and 2023 Butkus Award finalist.

2023 Team of the Year: Media (PA) Little League (2023 Little League World Series appearance, Mid-Atlantic Region champions and State champs). Players and manager Tom Bradley will be on hand to be recognized.

The Invincible Vince Papale will receive this year’s PSWA Living Legend Award.

Recently retired West Chester University and former Widener University head football coach Bill Zwaan will receive a lifetime achievement award for his legendary career.

Rowan University softball coach Kim Wilson, who owns 943 victories as a Division III head coach and was inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2023, will receive a lifetime achievement award.

Recently retired Temple University Senior Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications Larry Dougherty will also receive a lifetime achievement award for his stellar career with Temple, St. Joseph’s and his work with the Big Five.

Tim Saunders and Steve Coates, Flyers radio announcers, will receive the PSWA Campbell Award for excellence in broadcasting.

Philadelphia Inquirer sports writer Keith Pompey will be receiving the Stan Hochman Award for excellence in journalism.

Plus amazing comedian Joe Conklin will entertain the crowd ahead of his Jan. 20 show at Saint Denis Gymnasium in Havertown, PA.

We’ll also have Philadelphia Phillies public address announcer Dan Baker and Philadelphia Flyers public address announcer Lou Nolan on hand, plus our usual silent auction filled with interesting prizes and cool sports memorabilia signed by a variety of athletes, including those on hand, a 50-50 raffle … and more great nuggets to come!
