South Jersey’s Gaudreau brothers recognized with Native Sons Award at 120th Philadelphia Sports Writers Assocation Banquet; PSWA to make donation for playground construction
The late Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau were posthumously recognized as the recipients of the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association’s Native Sons Award on Thursday Jan. 16, 2025, at the PSWA’s 120th Banquet held at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Cherry Hill, NJ.
The former Gloucester Catholic hockey-playing brothers’ parents, Guy and Jane Gaudreau, joined the dais to receive the award.
Former PSWA president Sam Carchidi of The Hockey News, filed a story about the evening and the Gaudreau family. Please click here to read Carchidi’s piece.
Johnny was the winner of the Hobey Baker Award as the top player in college hockey at Boston College in 2014 as he led the Eagles to the Frozen Four, which was played in Philadelphia. In 2012, as a freshman, he helped BC win the national title. He went on to an NHL career from 2014-24 and he was named to seven All-Star appearances. Matthew also played at Boston College and had returned to Gloucester Catholic as the Rams head coach, taking over a role their father once held.
The Philadelphia Sports Writers Association also announced that it will be donating its proceeds from the 50/50 and silent auction at the 120th PSWA Banquet to an adaptive playground that’s being built in the brothers’ name at Archbishop Damiano School in Westville, NJ.
