Rhys Hoskins and Gabe Kapler of Phillies to attend PSWA dinner

December 22, 2017|

Two cornerstones of the new era of Philadelphia Phillies baseball- 1B/OF Rhys Hoskins and new manager Gabe Kapler- will be among the featured guests at the 114th annual Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Dinner, which will take place on Monday, January 15 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, N.J. (Tickets on sale now).

Hoskins, the 24-year-old product from Sacramento, solidified the middle of the Phillies lineup following his arrival from Triple A Lehigh Valley, smacking 18 homers and knocking in 48 RBIs in just 170 at-bats. He also recorded 29 homers for Triple A Lehigh Valley through his August 10 call-up. Hoskins homered in a Phillies record five straight games and recorded 11 homers in his first 18 major league games- becoming the first player in MLB history to perform that accomplishment.

Kapler was named the 54th manager in Phillies history on Oct. 30. He spent parts of 12 seasons in the major leagues with stints in Detroit, Texas, Colorado, Boston, Milwaukee and Tampa Bay. Kapler was a member of the 2004 Red Sox that broke an 86-year drought for the franchise and won the World Series. After his playing days, Kapler served as a broadcaster for Fox before being named the Director of Player Development for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2014 to 2017.

Hoskins and Kapler join Sixers broadcaster Marc Zumoff (Bill Campbell award) of NBC Sports Philadelphia and Eagles great/Soul owner Ron Jaworski (special achievement) at this year’s 114th annual dinner. Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz was recently named the Pro Athlete of the Year. Longtime Philadelphia Daly News columnist Rich Hofmann will also be present as the Stan Hochman award winner. Over the next few days and weeks, many other award winners will be announced, including the Living Legend, Native Son and Team of the Year. The PSWA’s signature event, the Most Courageous Athlete, will be announced at the conclusion of the dinner.
