The Villanova Wildcats made one of the most memorable championship runs in the history of college men’s basketball last season, stunning North Carolina on a last-second shot to capture the NCAA title and, in turn, secure their place as the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association’s Team of the Year.
Coach Jay Wright will accept the award at the 113th annual PSWA banquet on Friday, Feb. 3 at the Crowne Plaza in Cherry Hill. The banquet, which will honor numerous athletes, is open to the public and tickets are available here, or by calling 267-546-7277.
The Wildcats were selected as a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament after losing to Seton Hall in the Big East Tournament final. They would not lose again, finishing with a school-record 35 wins, beating two No. 1 seeds (North Carolina and Kansas), a No. 2 seed (Oklahoma) and a No. 3 seed (Miami) on their way to the national title.
The Wildcats’ 95-51 victory over Oklahoma in the national semifinal was the largest margin of victory ever in the NCAA Final Four. In the final against North Carolina, Kris Jenkins’ three-point shot with no time left on the clock gave Villanova a stunning 77-74 win that will go down as one of the greatest basketball games ever played.
In addition to Villanova, Scott Franzke and Larry Andersen, the radio voices of the Phillies, will be honored for their standout work when they receive the Bill Campbell Broadcast Award. Numerous Flyers captains from their history — including Eric Lindros — will be at the PSWA banquet, celebrating the franchise’s 50th anniversary. Many more honorees will be revealed in the coming weeks.
